Windows 7: The thrill is already gone.

Thursday October 22nd, 2009 Windows 7 was officially released. I scoured local electronic stores for a desktop and a laptop computer. Yes, I was shopping computers but not for me.

I have been using Windows 7 since the early Beta version and have been using the RTM version for more than 6 weeks to the launch date. I installed Windows 7 on multiple computers for testing purpose. A Pentium 4 Hyper-Threading desktop, a Centrino laptop, a MacBook Pro Core Duo, a Core 2 Quad desktop and an 8-core Mac Pro amongst many.

I personally don’t believe what many “tech journalists” have said before.

What I found out is that Windows 7 is not a leap and bound compared to Windows Vista. Windows 7 still a memory hog, albeit less than Windows Vista. On older computers Windows 7 is not pleasant to use. On current and powerful computers, Windows 7 does excel.

My experience certainly does not reflect of those of most computer users.

One shining feature of Windows 7 for me is the native support for AVCHD format. I own and use several AVCHD camcorders; Windows 7 now can now be integrated into the workflow.

Windows 7 is something new, but I’d recommend buying a new computer when the need arose. Please avoid buying computers because they are cheap. Buy the best possible hardware that you can afford.

P.S. B.B. King rocks the Blues!
